VISION CARE PROGRAMS

Eye Exams and Glasses:

The Shillington Lions Club Foundation provides Eye Exams and Glasses to financially disadvantaged individuals in our community at no cost to the individuals.

The program starts with a verbal vetting process to ensure eligibility followed with a matching to an appropriate eye care provider.

If you know of or are approached by someone that has vision needs and your Club cannot service that individual, contact us.

Eye Therapy or other Eye Corrections:

If you or your child is in need of eye therapy or other vision correction procedures contact us.  We will work with you to identify where to go and how to pay for the process.  Depending on the situation, there may be funding available locally or regionally.  Additionally we work with the Vision Resource Center of Berks County http://vrcberks.org to provide additional assistance.

Corneal Transplantation:

When an individual comes to the Shillington Lions Club Foundation that is in need of a corneal transplantation, we partner with the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware County http://www.lebdv.org  to assist the individual in obtaining the Corneas necessary for the operation.  In the event your ophthalmologist is recommending a corneal transplant, contact us.

Leader Dogs:

If you are blind, visually impaired or Deaf-Blind and you think that a Leader Dog could help, contact us.  We partner with Leader Dogs for the Blind http://www.leaderdog.org/ to help provide Leader Dogs giving the individual skills for a lifetime of independent travel and opening doors that may seem to have closed with the loss of sight.

KidSight:

The Shillington Lions Club Foundation provides free eye testing to children.  The program targets Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) that can be effectively treated when the individual is under the age of seven.  Additionally the testing uncovers Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness) and Astigmatism (irregular eye focus).

The Shillington Lions Club Foundation sponsored an event where KidSight vision testing was being conducted.  The following e-mail was sent to us shortly after the event.

“I just wanted to email you and tell you how thankful I am that I was able to attend your Community Event on 4/29 at Immanuel UCC. I had my children's vision tested and your machine detected an astigmatism in my 3 year old son. I took him to an eye doctor and he stated that all of you readings were the same as what he was detecting. My son is now headed to a pediatric specialist who will be prescribing glasses for him. The doctor stated that this test is a great resource for the community and also said that my son's vision problem would have gone undetected for years and would have been very difficult to correct later.

Once again, I am so thankful that you offer this service for our community. I would like to make a suggestion. You should go around to any local preschool or early child care provider and test the children early on. I am telling all of my "Mommy" friends to find events like the one I attended.

Thank you so much”

Contact us to find out about the next testing event.
